Planting seeds in Room 4

In Room4 we planted corn and peas into seed trays using Tui seed raising mix We received in our prize pack. We also planted some chilli and cherry-tomato seeds. we have put them in the window of our classroom where they will hopefully get lots of sunlight. We put our initials on our pottles to have a competition to see whose comes up 1st.

Today in Room 4 we planned out what we were going to put in our garden. We investigated what plants grew best together, this is called Companion planting We then followed our plan and planted broccoli, lettuces, onions, cauliflower, Pak choi. We used milk and fizzy drink bottles cut in half and placed them over our plants. We did this to protect the plants from frost and birds.

Two Gardens all ready to be planted out.

We have finished two of the 6 gardens which are ready for planting. We cant wait to get stuck into the planting once the last of the frosts have finished

The First Working Bee

We organised a group of parents to help out to start making the gardens. They put in a full day and completed two gardens and got the basics of others started. We decided to put old phone books in the bottom of the gardens to keep out the weeds. We had kindly been donated a variety of timber but we had to line a lot of it with black polythene around the sides.

The beginnings of our Gardens

Our WAVE team had been busy getting in touch with local retailers asking for help with building our gardens. We were very fortunate enough to get a lot of help and local retailers supplied us with the timber to create 6 vege plots, one for each class.
